As I rode through Amherst yesterday there was a sign over the Common that said "Annual Amherst Police Bicycle Auction" and it reminded me of a few years ago - a warm and sunny day and I was wandering around town in the late afternoon .. a crowd had gathered behind the new police station viewing the assorted, shiny and sometimes broken bikes. I was actually looking in earnest - but others were browsing - and there among the faces was bright eyes Julie - rosy cheeks and happy as could be participating in local scene, even tho she had no intention of buying - but being as committed to the chatter and activity as if she was.

And then later, while passing an outside bookstand there was a woman with a hat on that made me look twice - and there was Julie again - browsing through the books with a scarf or hat she used to wear when she was covering the trauma of hair loss during her treatments .. but she was smiling and just glad to be outside ..

I think Julie remains here .. wandering and browsing through the passages of Amherst and sitting at Bruegers outside and reading the Advocate .. and she is especially apparent during these early weeks of spring .. as life of the earth comes forth, so does her spirit.
